Blizzard Conditions

5th January 2010

Storms condition for observations today at Creag Meagaidh, with a decidedly unimpressed SIT looking on (Stability indicator technician – canine variety) Pit site at 850m South slopes of Cairn Liath. A fairly rough and ready ‘Tap test’ of recent windslab layers at the pit site. It is not necessary to see a layer slide – only to observe the collapse or failure at its base with interface of layer below. 100m below test slope was triggered on the ski descent at about 750m – just as the slope angle hit the 38 degree sweet spot. NB. Caution and appropriate equip (transceivers, probes & shovels) required for travel in test terrain.
