Fat Lady starting to sing

4th January 2022

I felt obliged to follow the theme of yesterday’s quip  ‘Close but no CIgar ‘ with the age respected not over ’till the Fat Lady Sings’  – in this case however it is perhaps more a case of she is just starting to sing….. fresh snow deposits, cold temps and just the right winds speed for soft slab development.   The quantities of new snow are, as yet, not that significant on our patch – but with the combination of cold temps and wind, we will have areas of instability developing, in high sheltered lee locations.

(Above) A promising start. A snow clad A86 alongside Loch Laggan

(Above) Forestry approach track to Beinn a Choarainn. Just about enough for ski access – although with it all being fresh on bare ground it’s not your ‘Sunday best’ skis you’ll be wanting!!

(Above) Beinn a Choarainn, East Ridge – small pockets of  weakly bonded new snow developing. More in the forecast overnight……
