Challenging conditions.

18th February 2022

(Above) Difficult road conditions this morning, particularly for those with summer tyres. This particular hold up was caused by a 4×4 getting stuck on a modest snowy incline due to lack of winter rubber on its wheels. No grip = no traction, irrespective of the all-wheel-drive capability you may have. Some pushing and shoving from the other motorists eventually got the Chelsea Tractor underway again.

(Above) Terrible photograph pretty much sums up visibility, or lack thereof. Snowing and blowing all day.  Shot taken at 690m in the lee of the NE ridge of Sron a Ghoire, looking toward the juvenile birch trees in lower Coire Ardair.

(Above) Low angle, low altitude snowpit but some worryingly easy releases during field tests today. The first layer weak layer down from the snow surface released spontaneously upon isolation at 24 degrees inclination. Much deeper snow was available nearby. Stability is poor and will remain that way overnight and into the early part of Saturday.
