Surrounded

17th January 2024

With stunning views, today was an interesting day to be amongst the mountains surrounded by lots of yesterday’s new snow, with bright sunshine and light to moderate North-Westerly winds. The considerable hazard on many aspects quickly became evident with a natural release on the South-East aspect of Coire a Chriochairein, further releases coming into view with progress towards Coire Ardier. Drifting made progress hard work at times. One further release was witnessed on the north aspect above Lochan a Choire. Redistributing snow was evident around the coires and summits throughout the day.

The hazard remains considerable with unstable windslab continuing to develop in moderate to strong North-West winds and further snow showers during the day.

Stunning views over Loch Laggan towards the nature reserve and Coire Ardier.

Snow settling having released on the SE aspect of Coire a Chriochairein.

A smaller release on a south aspect towards Stob Poite Coire Ardier. Six in all seen today.

Deep drifts on the upper path to Lochain a Choire.
