Patchy snow remnants remain – snow arriving.

18th December 2024

Observing snow patches and patterns was an interesting task for today with the best find being a running hare on the SW slopes of Creag Meagaidh.

The  Japanese in times past referred to snow patterns and shapes on local mountains to indicate when crops should be planted in the spring and looked out for shapes such as cranes, swallows etc. This was known as Yukigata – snow pattern watching! when farmers would look out for their particular snow patch shape each year.

I wonder if we will see the running hare again?

As the old Japanese proverb says ‘ One who chases after 2 rabbits will not even catch one’…….
But as Yukigata essentially is influenced by the underlying detailed topographic pattern and common snowmelt patterns, you might be lucky and see your running hare again, especially in winters of limited snow cover…..
