Beinn a Chaorainn

26th January 2025

(Above) The approach track to Beinn a Chaorainn. 25-30cm of snow here and would have been a bit of a tiring wade were it not for a couple of groups ahead who broke trail all the way up to the start of the ridge. There is a God!

(Above) Quite busy on the East Ridge today. Came across a large jolly group from North Wales enjoying the wintry conditions and mercifully very light winds, though they freshened and turned SE later. Poor viz up high early on but it did improve as the morning progressed.

(Above) The East Ridge in profile. Several groups visible in the shot. ‘Team Bangor’ just commencing their ascent bottom right.

(Above) Frozen light. Moody winter skies looking S towards Strath Ossian far right with Aonach Beag et al further left.

‘Squeaky bum’ avalanche forecast for Monday. Period of poorest stability expected to be overnight and into the early hours then some marginal consolidation in all snow by the end of the day. A slow improving trend then, but conservative route choice still required out there. Check the avalanche forecast for fuller details.

Finally made the SAIS blog, we’re famous! (Small group halfway up the picture) Haha
We were wondering who the sole person walking around the start of the ridge was.
Beautiful views as we topped the ridge. Thanks for all of your forecasting work!
