The White Room

31st January 2025

(Above) Aberarder Farmhouse’s enviable mountainous backdrop conspicuous by its absence today. A thin covering of fresh snow ‘early doors’ at this altitude (270m).

(Above) White Room-esque visibility up high today high on Carn Liath, so there was a mad scramble to get the camera out when the sun threatened to make what turned out to be a brief (…very brief) appearance.

(Above) Snatched opportunity. Momentary glimpse of Sron a Ghoire, with the crags of the distant Post Face just detectable a little further right.

There’d been snow showers at all levels overnight – persistent for a time – and some drifting up high on a WSW airflow so we had a minor windslab ‘problem’ (see the SAIS website to explore the full meaning of this term) today on steep N to E aspects above 920m. Yesterday’s crust was still detectable but softer, and the facetting beneath it all but gone. The deeper weaknesses in the snowpack have now yielded to the less cold conditions and all but disappeared on our patch.

Thanks for the last 3 day’s of your blog. Drove with our old camper from Torrin to walk into the coire and up right from the window to have a look about – a perfect Scottish winter day – the Post Face – totally incredible, yes; the fresh snow slope looking pristine up to the window then 5 or 6 feet of snow; I could just push the walking pole down waist deep! But firm enough for kicking steps. Face crunching wind crossing the “slochd” to the top. “Slochd” our neighbours phrase for a narrow place, with small high walls above.
Many’ thanks – possibly one of the last greatest places we must explore more…

A bit hard-going on foot but other than that yesterday really was one of those rare perfect winter’s day. Less so today!

Your enthusiasm is palpable and infectious, Ray!
