Starting from scratch (almost)

23rd February 2025

The theme for today was water. Whether it be puddles, flooding, burns in spate or waterfalls, there was plenty of water to see and not a lot of snow. With heavy and persistent rain for most of the day, the remaining snow is continuing to thaw at all levels.

It does look like winter will start to build again through the beginning of this coming week, perhaps starting from scratch. The mountains are looking mostly devoid of snow, although some snow does remain above 1000 metres, mainly confined to coire rims and gully lines. Tomorrow will be a completely different picture as the freezing level falls back beneath the summits and wintery showers move in.

Fresh unstable windslab will progressively build throughout the day on North to East aspects above 900 metres. These new deposits are not expected to achieve depth initially, but may become deeper towards the end of the forecasting period.

The Falls of Pattack in full flow. This was taken around 10am and the heavy and persistent rain continued until mid afternoon.

Whenever this tree came down, it must have made quite an impressive ‘thump’!

The River Pattack and the North-East facing Coire an lubhair Mòr on Geal Charn (1049m), one of the most Eastern mountains in our forecasting area.

East facing flanks of Geal Charn also holding on to some snow.

Some snow remains in Coire nan Gall.

Not been much of a winter this year but SAIS details are essential viewing for those of us who venture out every weekend. I have learnt a lot from the SAIS postings and it helps so much with safety, planning and risk management. Thank you for your work each winter.

Yes, the winter so far has been poor with just a couple of proper wintry interludes, at least for the climbers but maybe not ski-tourers. Let’s not write winter off just yet though, *could* all change in March.

Glad you find our reports and blog postings useful, Ross.
