Uncertainty
17th February 2025
There was little change to conditions from yesterday to today. The snowpack is mostly firm due to a surface crust. In places the crust is supportive and in others it is breakable.
During the next 24 hours, the freezing level is due to steadily rise to above the summits and there is precipitation due in the morning. However, there is uncertainty in tomorrow’s forecast as to how much snow and rain there will be. If the snow amount that arrives is at the upper end of what is forecast, then there will be unstable windslab development on North-West to North-East aspects above 900 metres. If the snow amount is at the lower end of what is forecast, then any windslab development will be minimal. It may be that what arrives is wet snow at summit level. Keep an eye on the prevailing conditions as you head into the hills.

Looking across the Moy Corrie towards the summit of Creag Meagaidh, which seemed to be cloud free for the most of the day.

Looking west to Beinn a’Chaorainn (1052m) with the East Ridge in the centre of the photograph. The white line running diagonally left to right is the snow deposit behind the ‘Moy Wall’.

We called them The Veils, the ice falls at the back of Corrie Choille- rais, a favourite haunt of Nevis Guides in the good old days when we could wander over the frozen lochan, not a good idea these days. There’s a grade one gully in the back corner giving access to the plateau making it the shortest way to the summit of Creag Meaghaidh from the road

Thanks Mick, good to learn some history of those ice falls. A beautiful spot indeed. We very occasionally see footsteps in the grade 1 gully.
