Wet Wet Wet

21st February 2025

Today was wet, warm and windy. A significant and rapid thaw was happening at all elevations and much of the existing snow is now in the rivers. There were particularly powerful gusts at times, whipping across the path and spraying water out of the river into the atmosphere.

It looks like there will be a respite from the wet weather tomorrow, before another day of heavy and persistent rain forecast for Sunday. A threat from cornice collapse, ice fall (yes, there was some still holding on this morning…) and rock fall remains.

Many burns are in spate. This is the stream coming out of Coire a’Chriochairein.

Pinnacle Buttress and The Post Face. As expected, the rock faces are now looking mostly black. The classic ice falls have become classic waterfalls.

‘Easy Gully’ and the waterfall running down ‘Centre Post’. Bits of ice still clinging on at the bottom of ‘Last Post’ but with plenty of water running behind it.

More water.

Looking at towards ‘The Window’. The coire certainly wasn’t busy today but there was a hardy group out embracing the challenging conditions, admiring where are the ice climbing has been over the past few weeks.
