After overnight heavy rain

5th March 2025

Persistent rain at all levels overnight gave way to light rain for the morning. Inevitably in the mild and wet conditions there has been a loss of snow cover. Low cloud reduced observations to higher slopes and I was unable to see where significant cornices remained.

The West to East variation in precipitation (in this case rainfall) with a SW airflow was illustrated well today for Creag Meagaidh (the Northern Cairngorms were dry). SEPA (Scottish Environmental Protection Agency) have rainfall gauges at Braeroy Lodge (near the NW edge of the Creag Meagaidh area) and the Spey Dam (near the NE edge). Twice as much rain was recorded at Braeroy Lodge as shown on the following graphs:

(Above) 24.6mm at Braeroy Lodge.
