Incoming!

26th March 2025

The Creag Meagaidh area has 22mm of rainfall in the forecast over the next 24hrs so if you’re thinking of a hill day in our neck of the woods best break out the oilskins and wellies!

There could be a little summit snow very late in the period as the freezing level dips down from 2000m to about 1200m but it’s likely to amount to nothing more than a dusting and therefore not expected to constitute any degree of avalanche hazard.

Bright and breezy today, Wednesday, and feeling quite cool near summits. Some haze but visibility was generally very good.

(Above) The Big Picture. Puist Coire Ardair, Sron a Ghoire, the Post Face of Coire Ardair, and The Window. Further snow loss almost guaranteed during the forthcoming wet and mild conditions.

(Above) Ventured in to the Ardverikie ‘Forest’ (a complete misnomer and an anachronism but included here for the sake of completeness…) to ascend Geal Charn 1049m, which is a handy viewpoint to carry out a snow audit on SAIS Creag Meagaidh’s southern border. It also has a decent sized cairn – pictured – so can add it to the expanding SAIS blogs’ catalogue of cairn photos. Bonus points for the trig pillar, too!

(Above) Some snow! And a view west down into Glean Spean, with the reservoir end of Loch Laggan prominent.

(Above) Better resolved shot of the remaining snow on Geal Charn 1107m and Aonach Beag 1116m. Beinn a Chlachair is on the far right of the shot.

(Above) A telephoto shot looking 48kms east towards ‘the broad sunlit uplands’ that comprise the backside of Cairntoul (flat top, right of centre) Angel’s Peak, Ben Macdui, a snow-lipped Lairig Ghru, and Braeriach (far left). The SAIS Northern Cairngorms’ duty forecaster was up on Moine Mhor (the Great Moss – downslope from Cairntoul & Angel’s Peak) today. And may the Lord have mercy on her soul! (Good effort!)
