The other side

19th March 2025

Observations today were from the North side of Creag Meagaidh to see what, and where, snow remained.

The North facing slopes and coires of Creag Meagaidh. ‘The Window’ is on the far lefthand side and the summit is just out of view right of centre, above the steep ground in the shade.  Notice the ice lower down in the shade, which will start to thaw tomorrow when the freezing level rises above the summits.

There is still some ice on paths and previously wet ground. This was at 400 metres on a Northerly aspect and remained there throughout the day. All patches like this were easily avoidable, but a good indictor that the snow patches will be firm and that there is no thawing happening at this point. Expect these to thaw tomorrow as the freezing level rises above the summits. The famous parallel roads of Glen Roy are visible on the righthand side.

Ice in the rivers this morning.

Coire Buidhe, a North facing coire high on Beinn a’Chaorainn. These snow remnants often glinted in the sun today. They would have been firm and icy. I came across this blog which was of interest as it shows the snow cover from similar locations in May 2014, considerably different to what we see today, with a note of an avalanche above Lochan Uaine.

Sròn a’ Choire and the upper sections of the cliffs of Coire Ardair seen from afar.
