Beinn a Chaorainn

16th December 2025

Wintry flavour for a time during the excursion on Beinn a Chaorainn today. Briefly bright in the morning and a chance for some meaningful landscape photography but misty above 800m for quite a lot of the time from late morning onwards. Didn’t notice much recently drifted snow though there was a thin lip of it above 1000m around the precipitous East-facing edge of the mountain. Elsewhere, just a superficial cover of fresh snow down as low as 800m.  Shower activity seemed to be concentrated at the western end of our area and was a bit whiter there compared to the east by the time I got off the hill.

All change on Wednesday: anticipating noticeable snow loss by the end of the day and after the onset of very mild temperatures and rain at all levels. Some very minor wet snow instability is possible on N to E aspects – but only above 1000m – from morning onwards, thereafter stability will improve, although quite a lot of snow will have disappeared!

(Above) Spotted a couple of folk descending the lower part of the East Ridge.

(Above) Looking across to Coire nan Laogh and part of the Creag Meagaidh summit massif.  Snow line round about 800m but little real built up noted anywhere.

(Above) 951m on a broad east-facing ridge of Beinn a Chaorainn. About 3cm of fresh snow here which is likely to disappear quite quickly on Wednesday.
