Dry and very cold in the glen

8th January 2026

It was a very cold morning in upper Strathspey, -12.5C when I left my van about 1kn SE of Garvamore (at the same time it was -7C on the summit of Stob Coire Dubh, 900m).

It was a dry day with light winds and the recently deposited windslab is slowly consolidating in the settled conditions, though weaknesses remain especially in accumulations on steeper slopes. Greatest accumulations lie on North through East to South aspects above 900 metres. Fragile cornices are present above these aspects. Windslab with weaknesses also lies on South-West aspects.
