Dry with good visibility
28th January 2026
The summits in the Creag Meagaidh area have been in the cloud for quite a while now and while there was still a good bit of cloud about today it was mostly above the summits. This gave me a good chance to have a look at the snow distribution and take some photos. There is some snow above around 500 metres with better cover above 800 metres.
The older snowpack has gone through at least one melt/freeze cycle and has an icy crust on it, breakable in places and firm in others. There is also a lot of rime ice on aspects exposed to the South-Easterly winds that there have been a lot of lately. On aspects sheltered from this wind which was particularly strong during Storm Chandra yesterday there are some deep deposits of windslab and fragile cornices. This windslab is fairly well bonded so likelihood of triggering an avalanche is low but the depth means that the consequences if you did would be a decent sized avalanche, hence the Moderate hazard observed today.
