Sleet and Snow

22nd February 2026

A slightly damp start to the day with rain overnight and well into the morning. The freezing level dropped during the day and snow and sleet showers reached around 600 metres, settling at around 800 metres.

Some avalanche activity was on a North aspect with a crown wall at around 1000 metres, most likely triggered by cornice collapse overnight. A climbing party also described debris in the ‘Inner Coire’.

Snow is expected overnight and through the day tomorrow on South-Westerly and Westerly winds. This will result in windslab development particularly around gully tops and areas on the edge of the Creag Meagaidh plateau, such as the cliffs of Coire Ardair. Snow amounts are expected to be modest, but should showers merge we can expect greater quantities combined with drifting from the plateau augmenting the primary Avalanche Problem (Wind Slab). Be alert to the possibility of different snow amounts across the Creag Meagaidh forecast area, and be prepared to adjust objectives. The Avalanche Hazard will be Moderate.

A friendly team from Northern Ireland’s County Antrim coast scoping out the climbing conditions on the ‘Post Face’ and the ‘Inner Coire’.

Coire nan Gamhna (left) and the north facing slopes with Puist Coire Ardair (right). There has been some further avalanche activity in the couloir in the centre of the image. These may have been triggered by cornice collapse, but the presence of crown walls indicates the slopes have been triggered on the scarp slopes below.

Some ice hanging on high up on the ‘Post Face’. Unfortunately, the picture is much damper below this altitude with detached ice and much running water.
