Rockfall today

24th February 2026

Poor visibility today (again) which limited phot0 opportunities.  Very quiet at Creag Meagaidh with only three vehicles in the car park this morning. A few people made the pilgimmage up the Coire Ardair path to ‘have a look’ with one team eventually opting for an ascent of Easy Gully. Noticeable snow loss today especially the thin superficial cover of sleety snow up high below 950m. Given the conditions, no surprise to hear rockfall in the vicinity of the Post Face this morning. Falling rocks and ice expected to remain objective problems during the mild and wet conditions. Plenty of old avalanche debris litters the base of some crags and below a few gullies – all from the 21st/22nd Feb. However, there was some fairly recent cornice debris below ‘Cinderella’ in the Inner Coire which probably came down yesterday.

Mild again overnight and during Wednesday with rainfall at all levels spanning the majority of the forecast period. Expecting the snowpack to be wet but reasonably well stabilised, save for some residual localised instability in the upper reaches of N to E aspects. Remaining cornices will be wet and weak. In these sort of weather conditions minor full depth avalanches from the steep crags in Coire Ardair cannot be ruled out either.

(Above) In the mist, the entrance to Easy Gully – the N-facing gully hard up against the E-facing Post Face of Coire Ardair. Rockfall heard near here mid-morning today.

(Above) Fairly recent cornice debris below ‘Cinderella’ in the Inner Coire of Coire Ardair. Looks like it entrained a few rocks and some earth en route down towards the base of the coire.
