Sunshine

12th February 2026

Today the summits slowly emerged from the cloud, the winds eased and the sun shone, resulting in the very pleasant day to be on the hill. Once again the car park was full at Creag Meagaidh so there were plenty of climbers, walkers and campers out making the most the conditions. As the South-Easterly airflow became North-Easterly there were perhaps none happier than those across in the Southern Cairngorms, where it was reported that Aberdeenshire saw the sun for the first time in three weeks; a record period of time without sun for them since Met Office records began!

Although it was colder than it has been of late, the sun certainly gave a feeling of warmth to the day.

The hills look white with a fresh dusting of new snow and plenty of rime. The snowpack is firm and icy and will remain so for the next few days. A slip or fall could have serious consequences due to hard snowpack and exposed rocks.

Coire Ardair and some blue sky.

A closer look at the top of Easy Gully and The Post Face. There are quite a few climbers to spot in here.

Coire a’Chriochairein. A small cornice is visible on the ridge flank and around the coire rim.

Sròn a’ Choire and Coire nan Gamhna. Geal Charn, Creag Pitridh and Beinn a’ Chlachair are seen in the background.

Carn Liath plateau and a few walkers maximising the fast travel conditions on the firm snow surface.

Looking North-West across the top of Mìn Choire, towards the Glen Shiel and Glen Affric hills.
