Post thaw reveal
2nd March 2026
Last night the freezing level rose to well above the summits with rain at all levels. There was potential for some shallow fresh snow deposits as the rain was due to turn to snow as the freezing level dropped in the early hours. On investigation today there was no evidence of any fresh snow, only rainfall at all levels which meant the snow surface turned firm and icy as the freezing level dropped.
Easy Gully is still complete and became firm as the freezing level dropped. Water could be heard running beneath the snow and the lower ice routes were running waterfalls. There was evidence of fresh rock and icefall in the bottom of the gully.
Puist Coire Ardair. Snow coverage at this level is still extensive. There was complete snow cover from here towards the summit of Creag Meagaidh.
Creag Meagaidh’s latest water feature. Quite an impressive water fountain, definitely worth taking a moment to pause, watch and listen.
Lochain Uaine and what is known as “Mad Meg’s” cairn which in poor visibility can easily be mistaken for being the summit of Creag Meagaidh which sits approximately 600 metres further West. The snow here and across much of the plateau was firm and icy.
Coire nan Gamhna sits behind Lochan a’ Choire. The old avalanche debris from beneath “Cinderella” can be seen in the foreground.
