Very mild and damp.

31st March 2026

13 degrees C. at Aberarder when returning from the hill at about lunchtime today and aircon turned to ‘cold’ for the journey home. (That was the ambition but the A/C doesn’t work very well so was actually more like tepid). Really mild and quite drizzly at the business end of Coire Ardair this morning and was not at all surprised to see some avalanche activity. Nothing big but the base of the crags in the Inner Coire and some of the gullies – especially Easy Gully – are littered with debris from overnight avalanches and cornice collapses.

If you read the text of these reported avalanches on our website you’ll notice that all of them are referred to as ‘transitional’. This is a handy term to describle avalanches that are triggered by the sudden change from cold weather and drifting to mild conditions and, quite often, rain. In general, snow doesn’t like change and the faster the change the less it likes it.

There was some noticeable improvement in stability after these events but wet snow instability will persist for a time on Wednesday before the onset of much colder conditions. There may be so late windslab development too at this time but we’re not expecting much.
