A thawing mountain
3rd February 2023
The past 24-36 hours has seen thawing conditions and snow loss. The snowpack is now saturated and well bonded. Not much joy for climbers or skiers at the moment.
A view from the East to Carn Dubh and Stob Corrie Dubh.
Bellevue and Pinnacle buttress
Looking up Easy Gully to the post face. Plenty of ice falling off the face today. Evidence of debris below the main drainage lines.
Evidence of cornice collapse and subsequent avalanche in the Inner Corrie.
Ice trying to hang on, on the Pumpkin.
Snow bridges are a definite hazard in the thawing conditions.
Where has all the snow gone ?? here it is !

It would be interesting to know if there are any records kept following construction of the Laggan Dam relating to the frequency and duration of operation of the jets and how this might relate to climate change since the 1930’s. I suspect a progressive trend of more frequent and longer operation but that’s just a gut feeling. The water level of the reservoir must be exceptionally high currently for such a continuous curtain of overflow across the face of the dam as well as the jets going full on…..
