Crust

12th December 2024

(Above) The Big Picture. Temperature inversion conditions again today so cold down low (ice on parts of Loch Laggan this afternoon) and milder near summits. Contrasty snow distribution too, with noticeably more on SE to S aspects above circa 500m and very little in other places….

(Above) The Window, the high E-facing bealach at the far end of Coire Ardair which tops out at 950m. Noticeably less snow here and on N aspects, too.

(Above) Coire Chriochairein. S and SE facing slopes and gullies enjoying the lion’s share of snow cover at the moment. However, it really is quite crusty above 600m which will test your will power and stamina if you’re considering transiting through these and similar locations.

(Above) The Post Face of Coire Ardair. 10-15cms of old snow above 500m – some compacted and icy – on the main path in Coire Ardair. Ice beginning to form on some popular ice routes on these steep crags and gullies.

(Above) Looking South. Watery mid-winter sunshine illuminated the low-lying mist that rolled into loch Laggan-side this afternoon. The hills of the Ardverikie ‘Forest’ in the background; Beinn a Chlachair is the highest point on the far skyline.

(Above) There must have been a wrinkle in the space-time continuum. The Turdis returns. This time to the old filling station at Kinloch Laggan on the A86 by Loch Lagganside after a few years absence. We blogged about this remarkable phenomenon some seasons ago when it was seen twice in our neck of the woods in different years, and once over in Glencoe if memory serves. Probably not teleported by a DeLorean, more likely a Ford Transit? (I was going to say a VW Transporter but I’ve got a feeling that would upset quite a few people who are members of the VeeDub fandom.)

It was crammed full of old Coke cans. What could that possibly mean? Is it trying to communicate something to us, like in the movie ‘Interstellar’?
