Depleted Snowpack

16th December 2012

Depleted cover below 750m – looking over to SE slopes of Cairn Liath from todays pit site at Bealach Sron a Ghoire

A non impressed ‘SIT’ at today’s pit site awaiting something to ‘Pop’ out – aren’t we all!
The cold spell of late had promoted some early stage facetted crystals within the snowpack. These grains (part way in development to full depth hoar crystals) are notoriously unstable.
Whilst the recent mild conditions will have done much to help stabilise these square shaped grains they are often the most resistant to change and can lurk at highest elevations where they remain as a weakening awaiting additional load.
No avalanche activity noted in the Meagaidh range but the phenomenon  responsible for recent avalanche events further East in the Cairngorms.
