Poor visibility on the tops

27th December 2025

High pressure continues to dominate but there was a notable absence of the sun today. It felt chilly on the mountain tops with fresh Northerly winds. It was predominately dry, albeit with a trace of drizzle when in the clouds.

Just like the last few days, it was whiter at lower elevations than higher up the mountain, with a hard frost in the glens. The frost in this photo had disappeared by early afternoon.

Due to the absence of snowfall and no anticipated snow loss due to the cold temperatures, little change was expected since our last visit to Coire Ardair on Christmas Eve. Unfortunately confirmation of this was limited because of the tops being engulfed in cloud for most of the day, which is where the remaining snow is. Thin slithers of ice are forming in Centre Post and Central Pillar. There was no ice to be seen in the Inner Coire, not because there isn’t any, but because the cliffs were never visible.

A closer look into the bottom of Easy Gully.

The path to ‘The Window” is mostly snow free but caution required with slippery rocks and ice patches like the one pictured above. The small remaining snow patches were firm.

More ice on the path heading towards ‘The Window’. The snow patches pictured above are areas often used as snow holing sites. The current snow depth here is 50cm at its deepest point. There was a feeling like the sun wasn’t far away, but it didn’t materialise at ‘The Window’ (950m).

Lochan a’Choire in Coire Ardair was frozen today.

Sròn a Choire. Some of the mountain tops started to clear early afternoon and it looked brighter to the West.

Cool photo of your shadowy reflection on the ice. A Scottish winter version of the ‘Jumpman’ (Michael Jordon) logo.

Thank you. Should have got an ice axe in the photo for the full Scottish winter version – next time!
