Thin snow cover – refrozen old snow

23rd January 2026

A colder day with a lower freezing level and a dusting of new snow, not as much arrived as expected but, significant amounts are falling in the mountains further East and it is likely that we are in a precipitation shadow being located further West.  The old snow pack is refrozen but still presents some challenging trail breaking due to the breakable crust, however this should become more load bearing as it remains below freezing above 700m for the next days.
