More poor visibility
16th February 2026
Another day with poor visibility but this is forecast to change for tomorrow, with a brighter day in prospect following some overnight snowfall. Instabilities within windslab persist and fresh unstable accumulations are building, and will continue to build overnight above 850 metres. The avalanche hazard is considerable.
The track at 280 metres elevation this morning with Sròn a’Choire up ahead. Rain at this level yesterday had melted much of the snow the fell here on Saturday night, leaving a slushy layer on the tracks and paths. This had then frozen and there is now a fresh dusting of snow on top. Result – icy paths with the ice often disguised. Care required.
Coire Ardair during the brief spell of ‘better’ visibility this morning before the snow showers returned.
Sizeable recent rollerball activity discovered on a steep slope at 750 metres. These were followed to their source at around 850 metres to discover that the most likely trigger was a mountain hare given the footprints in the snow.
A significant accumulation on a Westerly aspect at 900 metres. This will have developed during the weeks of persistent Easterly airflow. The pole is 1.15cm long and the top of the accumulation was 3 times the height. A feature that you definitely want to make sure you navigate accurately around!
