Mad March Weather
11th March 2026
Had the whole gamut of the weather types today: rain, snow, strong winds, sunshine, colder temperatures and some (very) weak warmth when the sun made a brief cameo appearance. All perfectly March-like, then!
Struggled to find a significant amount of drifted snow – even as high as 930m on a reliable lee slope – but drifting definitely a thing above 1000m as some of the photos below attest. Shower activity continued along with more drifting after I left the hill.
Quite a stormy weather forecast with 24cm of snowfall projected for our area over the forecast period, however, not confident we’ll see as much as that. Very strong winds, and rain at lower levels, too, though mainly overnight and early morning.
(Above) The Big Picture. Sron a Ghoire, the Post Face of Coire Ardair and The Window. Taken this afternoon during a lull in the shower activity. Cover of thin snow down to 750m this morning but any that fell on to S aspects was quickly despatched when the sun made a brief appearance.
(Above) Lochan a Choire and the Post Face of Coire Ardair. Brutal down drafts ripped across the lochan at times today and made for unsteady progress even along the flat.
(Above) Raeburn’s Gully. Broken about 2/3rds of the way up.
(Above) The NNE-facing crags of the Inner Coire, and The Window right. The summit of The Window is at circa 950m and there was very little newly drifted snow here late morning. Most of the action was above 1000m – note the spindrift coming off the top of the crags top, left of centre.

(Above) The Pinnacle, Easy Gully and the Post Face briefly illuminated by sun but didn’t last long…
(Above) …normal service resumes a minute or two later with clouds of spindrift masking the crags hereabouts.
(Above) Backlit shot of Bellevue Buttress. Frequent cascades of spindrift here especially later in the morning.
