Cold blustery day

27th March 2026

As forecast, the freezing level went above the summits overnight and judging by the wet snow surface layers at today’s snow-pit the isolated showers shown on the rain radar were most likely rain and not snow. All change today though as the freezing level steadily dropped and showers continued to feed in from the west bringing graupel and snow down to around 400 meters. Tomorrow is looking like more of the same with increased snow amounts in the forecast (see report for more detail).

A moody looking Coire Adair as the next squally shower marches in from the west. Some drifting snow can be seen on the plateau.

Visibility was poor in the showers. Hail and graupel made progress difficult without goggles.

When the sun did sporadically appear  it was warm enough to cause these minor wet snow surface instabilities on this Southerly facing snow patch at around 700 metres.

Sunwheel!

Dappled and patchy snow cover on many slopes.
