Wintry above 850m

(Above) Pretty wintry up high today with only brief glimpses of milky sunshine. This is looking back south whilst on the approach to Shark’s Fin Gully at 930m, a lonely spot just off the Carn Liath plateau. Came across a group of walkers who mistook this for the Min Window (there are topographical similarities, though not of scale). Triggered avalanche here today (behind the camera) and quite large new & ‘touchy’ fragile cornices. Visibility only briefly good enough to fire off this single shot on the plateau area.
(Above) The top end of Balloon Gully overlooking Coire Ardair. This faces south and there was a lot of rollerball activity and single point releases on these (briefly) sun-exposed aspects wherever there was a thin covering of fairly fresh soft snow.
(Above) The Post Face at the top end of Coire Ardair. Most of the principal gullies are full of old and recent avalanche and cornice debris. The top end of these gullies hold a considerable amount of new windslab. Quite a few of the old, large and gnarly cornices have collapsed but many remain. Most of the new ones are very fragile.
