Came on duty for a random single shift. Couldn’t have wished for a better weather day.
(Above) The Post Face of Coire Ardair from afar. Was a steller day.
(Above) Bellevue Buttress. Large cornices remain over very steep North to East aspects. The forthcoming spasm of mild and wet weather will weaken these dramatically.
(Above) The Post Face detail. Looking suitably white and wintry today. Good cover above 700m.
(Above) Sketchy broken trail up towards The Window. Still pretty tiring blazing your own trial ‘off piste’.
(Above) The steep North-facing ground to the east of Bellevue Buttress. ‘Historic’ point releases from almost certainly from yesterday.
A projected period of poor stability on Saturday as the freezing level rises quickly to 2000m accompanied by rain at all levels.
(Above) Looking into Easy Gully whilst en route to The Window. Channelled point release debris came off the crags and gullies of the Post Face during a milder period yesterday.
(Above) The cornice line above ‘Cinderella’ in the Inner Coire of Coire Ardair. Likely to succumb to the effects of gravity once the forthcoming meltdown kicks in.
(Above) Was accompanied by a Canadian Avalanche Association ‘Level One’ snow tech today. He was at the business end of the formal observations in the snow pit near The Window. All familiar recognisable stuff in the upper layers until he got 40cm down from the surface. ‘What the f### is this stuff?’. Glancing over his shoulder, I replied, ‘Wet grains. And welcome to Scotland!’
