Cloud magnet #2

16th March 2018

Another cloudfest today. Can’t seem to escape it. Creag Meagaidh seems to be on the outer periphery of the shower activity in the Highlands at the moment and the clouds – for once – provided some visual interest, though no silver lining.

(Above) The Met Office’s rainfall radar for about 9am this morning. The summit of Creag Meagaidh arrowed. Heaviest precip to the East and South of us. The shower activity more or less ground to a halt just to the SE of our area. We did get some light snowfall (and rain at lower altitudes) but not much and it remained pretty dry from mid morning onwards..

(Above) Gloomy! Photo looking South across Loch Laggan taken from the Coire Ardair path at just after 9.30am this morning. Low level cloud came scudding through with occasional glimpses deeper mid-altitude cloud formations above. (The white dot is the sun but you might be forgiven for thinking it was the moon given the light conditions at ground level.)

(Above) The rainfall radar at 1pm today. Creag Meagaidh summit arrowed.

(Above) Looking South again across the entrance to Coire Ardair at 1pm. Brighter but still with substantial lower altitude cloudbanks (with a well-defined boundary) almost certainly associated with a weather front just to the south of us.

(Above) The Post Face of Coire Ardair late morning. Very windy today with a lot of scouring on all exposed slopes.

(Above) Spotted a snowhole close to the Coire Ardair main path. 550m. That’s low for snow holes. Ergo we must have a lot of snow!

(Above) Two holes linking to form one snowhole. Had a look inside and it could in no way be described as spacious. Room for two? The snow here at 550m was pretty moist and receding a little today.

Getting a lot colder overnight with strong winds only easing later.
