The 3 o’clock wave

18th December 2019

(Above) Coire Ardair main track. Skis useful for access today. Cold, clear and almost ‘blue bird’; it became a little overcast later in the day, as the winds freshened.

(Above) Coire nan Gall. Some small ‘sluff’ activity as the sun hit freshly covered and mainly East facing crags, early in the day.

(Above) The ‘split board boys’ were out and about today – fresh from the Cornwall surf and headed for a few turns in Coire a Chriocharien (Stone Coire)

(Above) It wasn’t long before Ben burned me off (fresh legs and split board bindings) – onwards and  upward for the ‘3 o’clock wave’ in stone coire.

Meanwhile I shuffled / bumbled up towards the bottom of Balloon Gully, Cairn Liath (not such ‘fresh legs’) – before sheepishly  making a subdued exit from the coire (thinking of waves!) on my dodgy tele skis, dodgy legs (and even dodgier / knackered bindings)

Dream on……

Some cross-loading was going on just below the cornice lines (which Ben spotted)  – affecting mainly the very top East facing gullies – these and the tops ends of things in general (above 950m) being sensibly given a wide berth today by my trail buddy – the split board ‘runner’.

Let me know how you got on Ben – respect!
