Dense gloom
14th March 2020
Very poor visibility above 600m today and nil opportunities for photography. However, after doing the necessary observations in the high coire between An Cearcallach and Meall Coire Choile Rais we diverted to Creag Tharsuinn to photograph the debris of a full depth avalanche that slid this morning.
(Above) The Creag Tharsuinn full depth avalanche. Start zone was at a lowly 620m on a steep SE aspect. Crownwall approx 50m wide and 2m deep, running out 175m. We had heavy snowfall and drifting about 36hrs ago and then much milder temperatures today, especially at lower altitudes.
(Above) The location of the avalanche today, denoted by the purple line. Today’s formal snow observations site indicated by the purple star. An usual location for an avalanche on our patch – not a frequent flyer – but not without precedent.
(Above) Almost exactly the same location but on 24th February 2014.
