This blog is intended to provide hazard and mountain condition information to help plan safer mountain trips.
(Above) On the trail of the ancient pine. The Moy wall, an ancient boundary separating Badenoch from Lochaber. The well (re)made wall runs from the A86 to within 600m of the summit of Creag Meagaidh. The lower section is now a fence line instead of a stone dyke.
Episodes of drifting above 650m with some new windslab forming high up on lee slopes today. Colder on Sunday and in all probability more drifting so new windslab expected to be more of an issue.
(Above) The upper section of the wall which today provided the dividing line between scouring – on the right of the photo – and some deposition on the left, lee, side. Quite a lot of dense sintered snow in lee areas with windslab overlying it in very sheltered places above 850m. Crusty snow predominates below 600m pretty much everywhere. Skis still the best option for travel in the mountains, though you will have to carry for 10 minutes or so from the roadside.
