â« “It’s beginning to look a bit/a lot like winter”â«
7th January 2022
(Above) Snow cover at 750m in Coire Chriochairein. Some scouring down to a thin crust where the wind had done its work but a reasonable cover in sheltered areas.
Translation: “…a bit/a lot like winter…”
“…a bit like winter…” The mindset/outlook of those with nice skis and delicate tech bindings, generally used as ‘Sunday-best’ gear when the snow, snow cover and weather is good. (Rare combo, that, in Scotland.)
“…a lot like winter…” Err, those with rock-hopper skis, probably with frame bindings? (I know, a tad unkind!) Generally, game-on when the hills look the teensiest bit white.
For full disclosure. I’m a frame bindings-type of guy. (There. I outed myself.)
(Above) The main Coire Ardair path this afternoon. Snow about 7-8cms deep here at 550m.
(Above) Cloud cap: Creag Meagaidh and the western end of Coire Ardair seemed to have their own weather system for most of the day. Much clearer towards the east.
(Above) Clearer, brighter weather on the NE shoulder of Sron a Ghoire, which overlooks Aberarder Farmhouse. Note the wisps of spindrift. Drifting continued for most of the day onto steep N to SE lee slopes.
(Above) The Carn Liath massif, with Coire nan Gall (left) and Coire Dubh (right) illuminated by afternoon sunlight. The A86 is in the foreground.
(Above) The eastern end of Creag Meagaidh’s ‘core’ area, looking west over Blargie Farmhouse. Coire a Bheinn on the far right.
