Blizzard Conditions
10th February 2022
Gale force winds have become a constant theme in the mountains over the last few weeks, and today was no exception. Add to this the blowing and drifting snow, and today had all the elements for blizzard conditions.
Ski was the preferred method of transport today. Without them there was thigh deep snow to wade through, which became moist and heavy at lower elevations.
Above 700m unstable windslab was building in wind sheltered locations. Below this, the snowpack had become moist and will consolidate overnight as the freezing level drops.
Better visibility is expected tomorrow, and a brief respite from the gale force winds.
