Glorious (for summer)
9th March 2025
Today was absolutely glorious and would not have been out of place as a July day. There were people on the beach at Loch Laggan and many out enjoying the dry rock at Creag Dubh. On the high tops, wearing more than a light weight windproof would have felt over dressed. The full car parks early in the morning suggested many folk may have been out overnight, making the most of the beautiful weekend weather. Anyone staying out tonight will notice a stark difference in the morning and will perhaps find themselves reaching for a few more layers in the middle of the night.
The summit temperature was +6 degrees Celsius today and it will fall to below freezing overnight. This, combined with the windchill, will give a feel like temperature of between -10 and -15 degrees Celsius tomorrow.
The remaining snow patches will become firm and there may be a light dusting of fresh snow on the tops. There is uncertainty with regards to the fresh snow quantities but it is not expected to be significant, and may be greater towards the Eastern end of the Creag Meagaidh forecasting area. Regardless, it will feel far more wintry than it has this weekend!

A close up of some remaining snow near the top of Meall Coire Choille-rais at around 1000 metres on a North-East aspect.

An Cearcallach (993m) on the left and Beinn a’Chaorainn (1052m) in the centre. Compare this with the photos on the blog 2 days ago. There wasn’t a lot of snow on Beinn a’Chaorainn then but there is even less now.

A view of how today’s summit temperature (Creag Meagaidh) compared with the ones recorded over the last 10 years on the same day – 9th March. Interesting to find it was 10 degrees Celsius higher than this time last year.

Very helpful (and worrying) summit temperature chart. Not only 10 degrees warmer than last year but 6 degrees warmer than anything recorded in the last 10 years and the biggest yearly change by far…. The ‘classic ice climbs’ might be becoming a thing of memory?

Maybe if we do the same comparison tomorrow we’ll not see such a significant difference? But deeply worrying all the same. A less than ideal situation for those classic ice climbs.
