Coire a Chriochairein

12th January 2014

(Above) Towards the Post Face from Coire a Chriochairein. Two intrepid snowboarders visible making their way up the shoulder of the coire.

On skis today..not such a good choice for access as the thin cover of snow just covers rocks/stones on the main path. Was just OK away from the path but there are large areas of unyielding neve that merge abruptly into soft windslab. Spasmodic progress then with the added ‘delight’ of heather ‘surfing’ on the homeward leg. Scottish ski-touring…it just keeps giving!

Notably large areas of windslab up high today with easy shears and loads of low-grade signs of instability around. Was a little concerned about the intentions of the snowboarders as they were late to start and were no doubt looking for some deep snow somewhere. Hope they made it back OK.
