The Apprentice

20th February 2016

Very wintry again today. Deep drifted snow above 500m in sheltered lee areas and very hard going on foot. Skis were ideal and with The Apprentice out with me it was his job to break trail.

(Above) Thankful for some shelter from the wind but unfortunately that’s also where the new deep snow is forming.

Sam(Above) Inscrutable look on The Apprentice’s face. I think he enjoyed it? Plenty of good learning points in the snow pit today with easy shears and failures in new snow at quite low altitude.

The wintry weather will continue overnight night and throughout Sunday. There’ll be no let up in drifting and lee slope loading due to strong Westerly winds and upwards of 20cm of snow falling out of the sky. Very careful route choice advised.

Clearly skis are the best mode of transport.
